WAIRARAPA

Yellow Moray Eel
Miners Head, north Great Barrier Island
Depth: 3-22m
Sunk in 1894 the Wairarapa was one of New Zealand’s major shipping disasters. Most wreckage is strewn about by storms but some of the larger bits and the boiler are still intact at around 18m. Look inside for crayfish and yellow moray eels. Usually schools of demoiselles and sweep over the wreck and a few kingfish in summer.
