THE CANYON

Blue-eyed triplefin
NW side of Burgess Island, Mokohinau Islands
Depth: 0-30m
Without doubt the Canyon is one of the Gulf’s most spectacular dives. Descend at the mouth of the canyon to the maximum depth of 30m and work your way in alongside the wall. The fish schools will buzz you at the mouth where kingfish, trevally and blue maomao congregate. Below them pink maomao schools mix with butterfly perch and the occasional splendid perch. Take a torch to explore small caves and cracks where yellow morays and small crayfish live. The walls are covered with colourful invertebrates including pink Jason nudibranchs on white hydroids.
