SIMPSON’S ROCK

Long-fin Boarfish
Most southern rock of the Mokohinau Islands
Depth: 0-30m
Descend on the east side amongst snapper, trevally, butterfly perch and demoiselles. A crack near the centre of the rock becomes a cave at 20m. At 25m a level platform gradually drops away. The rock was once a military target and there are unexploded devices. Do not attempt to bring any to the surface. Very large red moki and scorpionfish among sponge-covered boulders. On the western side there is often more current and less visibility but masses of fish. Kingfish and the occasional bronze whaler shark, prey on the smaller baitfish schools. Stay near the rock and do not attempt to swim with the current.
