SAIL ROCK

Calcereous Sponges
SW of Hen Island, Hauraki Gulf
Depth: 0-40m
Schools of trevally, sweep, demoiselles, silver drummer and blue maomao along with mackerel, koheru and kingfish. Anemones cover the shallow walls and continue along with other invertebrates around the kelp holdfasts. Be aware of tangled nylon amongst the kelp. Many cracks, fissures and boulders make great hiding places for crayfish. Large yellow moray eels, red moki, snapper, tarakihi, leatherjackets, porae and John dory can be seen below 20m amongst grey finger, colourful golfball and encrusting sponges.
