RUAHINE REEF

School Shark
5km east of Stephenson Island, NORTHLAND
Depth: 8-40m
This dive site is best found with GPS. You stop seemingly in the middle of nowhere and descend. Only the schools of trevally and kahawai on the surface give a clue. The top of the pinnacle is fairly barren with stubbly weed and turban shells. Down the walls schools of fish swarm, mainly blue and pink maomao and numerous crayfish hide in the cracks. Short-tailed stingrays congregate here in summer. At 30m are long-finned boarfish and diadema urchins.
